Mongolia and Mims’ no-Flash diet

by

Mr. Dinosaur

I’m sure the question is burning on the minds of all (seven) of our avid reader’s minds – “Why haven’t I heard any juicy Flash-related gossip from dispatchEvent™ this summer?” The answer may surprise you!

I (Mims) have taken the summer off to participate in a race from London, UK to Ulaanbataar, Mongolia with two other friends from Brooklyn. In fact, I’m writing from Kraków, Poland right now! You can read all about our misadventures on our team website, Mr Dinosaur Drives to Mongolia – the website.

The plan is for me to return around the middle of September. Until that time, I’m going to be on a strict no-Flash diet so you won’t be hearing much from me. However, when I return the Bible should just be hitting the shelves and I’ll probably even see you at Flash Forward. Meanwhile, Roger will hold down the fort.

Thanks as always for reading. Until next time… Dziekuje!

Really, really small Flex files

by

I am not even going to mention that Flex 3 public beta is out because you already know.

What you may have been too excited to notice though is that Flex 3 will now cache the Flex framework for users meaning that Flex applications don’t have to save all of that stuff in the SWF file making them very small (like 50KB). Think about that! This is huge news and I predict it will be the final stroke that wins many Flex skeptics over to the platform. Not only that, but you’ll be able to include your own custom runtime shared libraries (also cached) so you can create functionality that’s shared between several applications.

Ted Patrick, in his evangelical way, describes this feature with handy diagrams on his blog.

There is also an introduction to new features on Adobe Labs so you can gush over videos and samples of all the new features.

On a side note, it looks like Leopard, the new version of OS X, will provide significant improvements for quickly accessing your porn.

Flash Game Roundup

Procrastination

Here are a few great Flash games that have held my interest for more than a few minutes. Most links came from Game|Life (thanks Chris).

  • Winterbells – Very simple but well build game. Kind of a variant on the kick-up type games.
  • Flash Element TD – A Flash game based on a mod of Warcraft III? It’s a simple but addictive strategy game.
  • Four Second Firestorm – A WarioWare clone created by several different development teams. Very fun but I don’t know who still wants listen to that Eurotrash Club music.

Oldest New Feature Awards

OK, OK, I promised myself I wouldn’t knock on Vista until I’ve really given it a fair shot, and I think that’s what I was doing when I went to the Vista features showcase too see what fantastic new innovations are on their way from Redmond. I’m sure it’s no surprise that most of them had already been fantastically innovated by their competitors.

But there are some among these which many of us have been enjoying for so long now that they are as much features of an operating system as a steering wheel is a feature of a car. So without further ado, I present

2007 Tech Preview

by

For the first time since the second time I dropped out of college, I feel compelled to dedicate large amounts of time to learning new things. 2007 seems to be the year that everything new comes out (well, actually most of it came out last year but this is the year we start to care). Is this Web 2.5? or maybe just a patch – Web 2.0.1? or maybe it’s something else less cheezy than either, just an interesting time for technology. Whatever it is, if they actually taught this stuff at a university, I would quit my job and become a student again.

Here’s a list of some of the new platforms, technologies, and languages I’m interested in learning about right now. I would love to receive comments on these if you’ve got anything to share or if you see something I may have missed.
