Tech Writing Tips

by

As you may know, Roger and I are working on the next version of the ActionScript Bible published by Wiley (the Amazon page is full of errors, don’t worry, it’s not even out yet). I wanted to share a few tips that I use as notes to myself for when I’m stuck with writing.

  • Write headlines and use the outline view to order the big picture
  • Simplify
  • Base information around a task that the reader might want to do
  • Write or flow without being concerned about the form then go back and edit it later
  • Ask “Do I really need this?”
  • Read other similar books
  • Say it out loud then write down what you say
  • Work on something that you know you can finish then go back to where you were stuck
  • Forget about style and focus on the facts
  • Take breaks and do something different like drawing a diagram or writing a code sample

The elusive AS2 -> AS3 Migration Guide

by

Don’t ask me why, but the very long yet very useful ActionScript 2.0 Migration document formerly on Adobe Labs, does not currently appear with the rest of the documentation for AS3 (Although I can never seem to find it) Now it won’t get away! You can see it with your own eyes HERE.

Point-and-Click Development

After visiting a Games for Change salon last night, I spent some time thinking about the possibilities for developing point and click adventure games (a la king’s quest, Monkey Island, etc.). After some googling, I found these resources shared here for your benefit:

Danny Patterson and Me at the next last AUG

by

UPDATE: We had our AUG meeting last night. I believe it went very well. Danny presented how to set up custom Proxies and I talked about the State pattern. We also had a general discussion about how visual elements work in AS3 and Flex.

Please click below to download the presentation notes and actionscript files.

See you next month!
The next Manhattan Adobe Users Group is coming up next Wednesday, 10/04. It’s going to be a design patterntastic time! Danny Patterson is a genius and fully dedicated Flash nerd who will most certainly be dropping mad design pattern knowledge on y’all. I’ll be covering the state pattern and some fun things you can do with it using Flash and Flex. Sign-up and see you there!
